Chain Stitched Rugs Although the carpets of Kashmir are world famous for its colour, design, fabric and durability but for floor covering chain stitched rugs are a speciality of Kashmir . These rugs are finely embroided all over in superior woollen yarn with the technique of continued stitches, not by the needle but by the hook done over hesian and sometimes on hand woven cotton covering all the base. For embroidery, apart from the floral patterns, animals and human figures are also used. The designs are traced by the naqqash while the embroidery work is done in two or three ply woollen yarn. Silk yarn is also used sometimes. Around 6000 workers are engaged in this craft. A chain stitched rug has the look of a carpet substituting pile by texture. Hesian based chain stitch is also used for variety of smaller articles as screen drapes, wall hangings and cushion covers etc�
